About School Clubs

Shaping Active Global Citizens

The AFS Intercultural Exchange Programs (IEP) Ghana School Clubs began in 1968, when returning exchange students created a platform to share experiences and promote intercultural learning in Ghana. Today, there are 41 active clubs in Senior High Schools nationwide, with over 2,000 student members, making them one of the most vibrant and preferred student organizations on campus.

The clubs are student-led, guided by teacher patrons and supported by the AFS Ghana Education and School Relations desk. Their motto, “Active Global Citizens today and tomorrow!”, reflects their mission to nurture young people who make informed, ethical, and compassionate choices that build a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world.

Through interactive projects, discussions, and community engagement, the clubs help students develop essential life skills such as:

  • Leadership – planning and guiding initiatives
  • Communication – expressing ideas and listening actively
  • Teamwork – collaborating to achieve shared goals
  • Empathy – understanding and respecting differences
  • Critical Thinking – solving problems and addressing global challenges

AFS Ghana School Clubs are more than just co-curricular groups—they are training grounds for future leaders and changemakers, empowering young people to take action for collective well-being in their schools, communities, and beyond.

Story behind Development

AFS Ghana School Clubs have a very rich history. It all started in 1968 when a group of students from various secondary schools in Ghana returned home from their one year AFS intercultural exchange program in the USA. These students saw the need of having a platform that would be used to share their experiences and to propagate peace through intercultural learning. The first AFS Ghana School Clubs were established in Cape Coast schools, and later extended it to other schools in the other regions.
Due to the dynamism of AFS Ghana School Clubs in schools, their activities overshadowed other clubs attracted a tag as an “elites club”. This perception has gradually faded off with the prudent involvement of the national office and school club patrons to bring the club to the status of an ‘all-inclusive’ club.
